ethnomedicine

’Folk’ ideas and practices concerning the care and treatment of illness available within particular (usually non-Western) cultures-that is, outside the framework of professionalized, regulated scientific medicine. They commonly involve empirically based natural remedies, frequently from plants, and healing rituals with a supernatural element. Often deemed unscientific, such methods of healing are increasingly shown to have some value.
